Welcome to this week's Blonde Intelligence with me, Ms. Roni, where I always seek to give you exquisite cranial repertoire. As a previous indie artist manager and show manager, I have seen such fu*kery....Lawd have mercy. There are steps involved to releasing a project as an indie artist. You can not finish a project and drop it in a few damn days. Hell, some want to drop within the first hour of getting it back, skipping every damn essential step.
In the planning stage of a release certain things have to be taken into account. Every decision is interconnected to the other. In one of my horror stories as an artist manager, the artist had completed a video and wanted to release it the same day because it was edited (edited good enough for him and Vevo has a timeframe to be approved). The same scenario with releasing music. What was not taken into account? How about copyrights, PRO, Publishing, Artwork, Distribution, virtual encode, SoundExchange, Songtrust, Harry Fox, Milward-Kantar, promotion strategy, Spotify submission, video, video distribution, and so on....Could all of these things be done as soon as you walk out of the studio?
I have seen indie artists not have a damn split sheet, which means it never should have reached release stage. Many indie artists do not know that music has to be encoded. Some have no idea about SoundExchange or Songtrust. Some don't know how to transfer distribution....how to get barcodes for merch...where and the allotted time to register live performances....how to get clearance on a cover song...how to register a split sheet with someone belonging to a different PRO...and so on. All of these things in some form or another affects your release date. Imagine not being registered at all...are you planning your release or just dropping shit.
